Now that school is finally out, it’s time to celebrate. And what better event than National Fishing and Boating week (June 6-14, 2009)? This annual event occurs each year during the first week of June, and beside being a good reminder to get out and wet a line, it typically kicks off fishing derbies all over the country. What’s even better, many states offer free fishing days during this week. It’s the perfect opportunity to get out and fish without having to worry about a fishing license. Trust me, it’s worth it. In my state, it looks like our freebie is this Saturday, so you can bet I’ll be on the water with a few newbies in tow. It’s much easier to introduce someone to the sport when they don’t have to pay for anything (HA!). In fact, that’s one of my own personal unwritten rules of fishing—it’s always better when someone else goes with you. If you head out, let me know if the fish were biting and if you were able to tow someone along for the ride (especially if they’ve never fished before). —Ben
