I am not a fishing expert. To borrow a phrase from the late, great Bob Brister, I’m just an old guy who thinks he knows a lot. A fishing expert, on the other hand, knows everything. I have met anglers who called themselves expert.
I always thought that was dumb. How can anyone know all there is to know about fishing? Because of what I do at Field & Stream, I’m sometimes asked if I’m a good fisherman. Well yes, I’ll say, but there are lots of good fishermen. I’d rather be known as a good student of fishing.
After well over 50 years on the water, fresh and salt spanning three continents, I still learn something new every time I go fishing. Learning, to me, is a big part of the fun. If I knew all there was to know about fishing, I’d give it up and find something more interesting.
