Let’s be honest: One of the best things about hunting and fishing trips is the great food we get to enjoy. And sometimes reliving a particularly good meal can be as much fun as retelling a memorable hunt or catch. Which is why we’re introducing a new regular here on The Wild Chef: “My Best Wild Meal Ever.” Every so often we’ll chat with someone about the single best fish or game meal of their lives.

Our first guest is the one and only Ray Eye–gobbler guru and host of Eye On the Outdoors. Take it away, Ray:

Man, there are so many great meals, but I’ve narrowed it down to one that I enjoyed during a trip in Alaska. We were hunting blacktail deer on Kodiak Island with Captain Mike Flores of Ninilchik Charters. We stayed on a big boat anchored offshore, and would move from area to area to hunt.

The best meal of the trip was fresh Alasak crab legs (below left) that we caught, giant shrimp (below right)_, and charbroiled Kodiak Island blacktail backstraps_.
