Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, the pen behind The West Wing, Charlie Wilson’s War and the recent box office success, The Social Network, has lashed out in the blogosphere in response to a recent episode of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” in which the former governor is shown hunting caribou with her father on her reality TV show.
Sorkin isn’t miffed because Palin missed five shots on a caribou before downing it, but because he says she used killing animals for political purposes, calling her a “witless bully” and likening her purported love of caribou hunting to “Michael Vick’s penchant for dog fighting.”
From this story on ABCNews.com:
_Hollywood screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is going after Sarah Palin with guns blazing, calling the former-Alaska-governor-turned-reality-TV-star a “witless bully” for proudly killing a caribou on national television.
In Sunday’s episode of her TLC reality show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” the 2008 vice presidential nominee showcased her shooting skills while hunting with her father in the Alaska tundra. In a pre-emptive strike, Palin defended her love of hunting against the “anti-hunting hypocrisy.”
“Tonight’s hunting episode of Sarah Palin’s Alaska ‘controversial’? Really? Unless you’ve never worn leather shoes, sat upon a leather couch or eaten a piece of meat, save your condemnation of tonight’s episode. I remain proudly intolerant of anti-hunting hypocrisy. :)” Palin posted on Facebook and Twitter the day before the episode aired.
Sorkin launched a profanity-laden counterattack today, accusing Palin of being a “phony pioneer girl” who tortures animals for fun, rather than killing for necessity.
_”Like 95% of the people I know, I don’t have a visceral (look it up) problem eating meat or wearing a belt. But like absolutely everybody I know, I don’t relish the idea of torturing animals. I don’t enjoy the fact that they’re dead and I certainly don’t want to volunteer to be the one to kill them and if I were picked to be the one to kill them in some kind of Lottery-from-Hell, I wouldn’t do a little dance of joy while I was slicing the animal apart,” Sorkin writes in a blog posted on The Huffington Post, entitled “In Her Defense, I’m Sure The Moose Had It Coming.”
_”I’m able to make a distinction between you and me without feeling the least bit hypocritical. I don’t watch snuff films and you make them. You weren’t killing that animal for food or shelter or even fashion, you were killing it for fun. You enjoy killing animals,” Sorkin says of Palin, who he calls “deranged.”
According to Sorkin, Palin’s love of caribou hunting is no different than Michael Vick’s penchant for dog fighting. “I can make the distinction between the two of us but I’ve tried and tried and for the life of me, I can’t make a distinction between what you get paid to do and what Michael Vick went to prison for doing. I’m able to make the distinction with no pangs of hypocrisy even though I get happy every time one of you faux-macho shitheads accidentally shoots another one of you in the face,” he writes.
Having served time in prison for his involvement in organized dog fighting, Vick is now the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. Like Palin, Vick also had his own reality show, “The Michael Vick Project” on BET.
Sorkin, who is best known for his political dramas including “West Wing,” “The American President” and “Charlie Wilson’s War,” goes on to accuse Palin of killing for political purposes. “That was the first moose ever murdered for political gain. You knew there’d be a protest from PETA and you knew that would be an opportunity to hate on some people, you witless bully. What a uniter you’d be — bringing the right together with the far right,” he says._
So what do you think? Sorkin comes from the left and always has, but does he have a point? Is it all a show for Palin leading up to 2012?
