Tiger Shark Breaks Rod: Why Is This News?

It must have been a slow news day in St. Petersburg, FL, last week, because Bay News 9 ran with a story about an angler snapping his rod in half while fighting a 9-foot tiger shark. The battle of man vs. beast was captured in the video below. According to the dude fighting the shark, the rod that was snapped cost him $1,000 dollars. Now, I'm a guy pretty plugged into the tackle world, and I've yet to come across a rod (other than custom bamboo fly rods) that cost a grand. If on the off-chance that stick really was worth that much, you might think he'd have fought such a big fish with a bit more, um, form.
