Nothing compares to stepping inside a brick-and-mortar fly shop and picking out some new gear. But, there are times the convenience (and discounts) of shopping online are tough to beat. With that said, we rounded up a collection of our favorite gear on Amazon.
Field & Stream Line Burner Fishing Shirt
Did you hear the news? We launched our first-ever line of performance fishing clothing. And after having tested it on my favorite trout river, I can honestly vouch that this stuff is great. My favorite piece from the collection is the short-sleeve Line Burner shirt.
One bit of advice: These shirts run a bit big, so I'd size down. I typically wear a large, but the medium fits me perfectly.
Orvis Clearwater Fly Rod Outfit
Not only is this a great fly rod and reel for the money—it's a great fly rod and reel period. I don't think you could ask for a better rig for a beginner angler. The Clearwater has performed well against fly rods that cost five times as much in our fly rod test.
Costa Grand Catalina Sunglasses
In the 26 years I've been fly fishing, I've never worn a better pair of polarized sunglasses. The first time I tested these on the river, I felt like I had x-ray vision.
New Zealand Strike Indicator Tool Kit
Nymphing is my go-to method of trout fishing, and I prefer using an indicator way more than Euro nymphing (BORING!). I've tried just about every style of indicator out there, and this one is my favorite.
Scientific Anglers Absolute Trout Supreme Tippet
Yes, this stuff is a bit on the pricey side. It's also strong as hell, durable, and nearly invisible.
Field & Stream Men's Slinger Nylon Fishing Pants
My second-favorite item in the Performance Fishing line? The Slinger Pants. I wet-waded in these all summer and was seriously impressed by how comfortable and fast-drying they are. They have plenty of pockets for gear and loads of stretch for mobility on the water. They're also stylish. Just because wet-wading season is behind me, that doesn't mean I won't be wearing these all fall long.
Simms Guide Vest
Some anglers prefer a sling pack or chest pack. Me? I like a fly-fishing vest. And there's no better vest out there than the Simms Guide Vest.
Fishpond Riverkeeper Digital Thermometer
This gadget is so slick. I used to keep an old-school stream thermometer in vest for years, but never used it because it took too long. The one reads the water temp instantly, so I use it all the time.
