Smoke & Find: Build a signal fire in an open area, such as a ridgetop. Stack green boughs beside it so you'll be ready to make a smoke signal to alert search aircraft.

Match Raincoat: Place chunks of a candle in a jar, seal the jar, then place it in a pot with water and simmer until the wax melts. Dip your matches headfirst, coating about half of the match. Let dry and store in an airtight container.

Power Outage: We've heard of the trick that creates a spark with steel wool and a battery, but it's neither practical nor reliable. Stick with matches.

Just How Cold Are You? If you need fuel badly, your cotton briefs will flame up quick!
