Given the year that 2021 was, what type of new handguns would you expect to see for 2022? The answer to that question should be obvious. With more and more folks wanting to carry handguns for personal protection, 2022 looks to be the year of the ultra-compact 9mm pistol. Almost without exception, the new-for-2022 handguns are small, 9mm, semi-automatics.

But what would a new year in guns be without an exception to the rule? While self-defense handguns will drive the market, we’re also seeing a few new handguns to help you get your cowboy on. And maybe the best thing about handguns in 2022 is the prices. Most of the guns below are reasonably affordable.

1) Diamondback Firearms Sidekick

Diamondback Firearms Sidekick

  • Weight: 2 pounds
  • Capacity: 9 rounds
  • Barrel Length: 4.5 inches
  • Caliber: .22LR, .22Mag (convertable)
  • Price: $320

Well known for their ultra-compact semi-automatic pistols in 9mm and .380, as well as their AR15s, Diamondback Firearms is bringing an unexpected gun to market this year: a single-action, rimfire revolver. The Sidekick is a modern take on a western-style revolver design. It ships with a .22LR and .22 Magnum cylinder, however, unlike most single-action rimfire revolvers, the cylinder on the Sidekick swings out on the left side of the frame—making loading, unloading, and cylinder swapping, faster and easier. Currently, Diamondback is only offering a 32.5-ounce version with a 4.5-inch barrel. But with features that are unavailable on competing single-action rimfire revolvers, the Sidekick should be a hit.

2) Kimber R7 Mako

Kimber R7 Mako

  • Weight: 1.2 pounds (without magazine)
  • Capacity: 11+1 rounds with flush-fit magazine, 13+1 rounds with included extended magazine
  • Barrel Length: 3.37 inches

  • Price: $599 optics ready, $799 with optic installed

The R7 Mako from Kimber is a polymer-framed, high-capacity, striker-fired, micro-compact pistol. Chambered for the 9mm Luger, it’s only one inch wide. Kimber is offering two versions of the Mako: An optics-ready version with a removable slide plate, and an optics-installed version with a Crimson Trace CT-1500 reflex sight. Both versions feature highly visible TruGlo Tritium Pro Night Sights. Other appealing features include ambidextrous controls and a flat-faced trigger tuned to break at between 5 and 6.75 pounds. Kimber will have a wide range of accessories available for the R7 Mako, including holsters and 10- and 15-round magazines

3) Nighthawk Korth Mongoose Carry Special

Nighthawk Korth Mongoose Carry Special

  • Weight: 2.1 pounds
  • Capacity: 6 rounds
  • Barrel Length: 2.75 inches
  • Caliber: .357 Magnum, 9mm with optional cylinder
  • Price: $3699

As you would expect, Nighthawk has a new 1911. And, while 1911s are what Nighthawk is known for, we’re skipping it. Instead, we’re looking at one of their unique revolvers from Korth. Korth makes some of the best double-action revolvers available. They are built in Germany and imported by Nighthawk. New for 2022 is the Mongoose Carry Special. It comes chambered in .357 Magnum and can be converted to 9mm Luger with an optional cylinder. It also has a Hogue grip, adjustable rear sight, 18K-gold bead front sights, and a four-digit price tag.

4) Ruger Wrangler Birdshead

The Ruger Wrangler with birdshead grips.

  • Weight: 1.75 pounds
  • Capacity: 6 rounds
  • Barrel Length: 3.75 inches
  • Caliber: .22LR
  • Price: $279

Ruger’s affordable Wrangler pistol has proved to be very popular. At only 35 percent the cost of their famous Single Six, the aluminum-alloy-framed Wrangler is a much more affordable way for you to experience the allure of the single-action, rimfire revolver. Ruger has introduced a Wrangler with birdshead grips this year in three colors—black, silver, and burnt bronze. The new Wranglers also have shorter 3.75-inch barrels and weigh only 28 ounces. Many shooters will appreciate how compact it is as well as the feel of the radiused grip.

  • Barrel Length: 4.69 inches
  • Caliber: 9mm

For 2022, SDS is importing the third generation of the PX9—a duty-sized, polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol that ships with one 18- and one 20-round magazine. And this is where things get interesting with the PX9. It uses Sig Sauer P226 magazines. It will also fit Springfield-Armory XD holsters, and it is compatible with Glock aftermarket sights. It’s available in black, flat dark earth, and OD green, and the grip is modular with six side plates and three backstraps, allowing you to customize the fit to your hand perfectly. A version of this pistol is also available with a threaded barrel.

6) Smith & Wesson CSX

  • Capacity: 10+1 rounds, 12+1 rounds with extended magazine
  • Barrel Length: 3.1 inches
  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Price: $609

This year, Smith & Wesson is coming out with a micro-compact pistol called the CSX. Surprisingly—from the same company that’s famous for the striker-fired, polymer-framed, M&P and Shield pistols—this is an aluminum-framed, single-action, semi-automatic pistol, that reminds you a lot of the old Colt Mustang. The main difference between this pistol and the Mustang though is that it’s chambered for 9mm Luger as opposed to .380 Auto. It’s also built around a double-stack design offering either 10+1 or 12+1 capacity. Unloaded the CSX, which measures only 6.1 inches long, weighs only 19.5 ounces. The barrel and slide are stainless with an Armornite Finish, and metal three-dot sights are standard. The top of the slide is serrated, the front of the grip is textured, the manual thumb safety is ambidextrous, and the magazine release button is reversible.

7) Stoeger STR-9SC Sub-Compact

Stoeger STR-9SC Sub-Compact

  • Weight: 1.6 pounds
  • Capacity: 10+1 rounds
  • Barrel Length: 4.17 inches
  • Caliber: 9mm
  • Price: $329 for the standard model, $399 for Tritium night sights

For 2022, Stoeger has shrunk their STR-9 down to sub-compact pistol proportions, and they’re offering two versions of it. The STR-9SC is a polymer-framed, striker-fired, pistol that measures only 6.5 inches long overall. It can be had in its standard form with three-dot sights or with Tritium night sights for about $60 more. The optics-ready version, which comes standard with 3-dot sights, has a removable slide plate and includes additional mounting plates for maximum reflex sight compatibility.

  • Barrel Length: 4 inches
  • Caliber: 9mm

The additional ¾-inch of barrel (give or take) adds about three ounces to the pistol, which has an unloaded weight of 29.3 ounces and a loaded weight of 36 ounces. The latest SFX9 is full of well-known Wilson Combat features like X-TAC front- and back-strap checkering, cocking serrations, and a host of Bullet Proof parts. It ships with two 15-round magazines, and though it looks like a 1911, the SFX9 series of pistols do not have the common 1911 grip safety.
