Deer Hunting

First Deers... Woo!

Uploaded on November 09, 2009

I had shot hogs, rabbits, and everything else that moved, but only this year did I get to shoot a DEER. Sure, I'd helped others get em, but I never really shot one. So, we sat in the stand, and I had my open sighted Winchester model 100 30-30 in my lap. This deer came around 7:30, a spike. He actually walked real close to the stand, around 25 yards... I was going to wait a few minutes to see if a better buck was around, like the guys in magazines, but this guy was coming, and quick...

I put the grunt in my mouth and blew... I dont know if it was needed, but it stopped him, and I made a perfect shot with that old 30-30. I cleaned him up, learned to skin and quarter him, and went for more blood the next morning. Before light, I saw what I thought was a doe, and when it got light enough to shoot, excitement got to me, and I dropped the deer.

He ended up being a little old four point, but the guys said it was cool because he was eating all the corn anyway... Skinned him and quartered him myself. :D

Some would say that I wasted buck tags, but the way the guys were eating those tender and juicy young backstraps, I think I did okay. Hey, they won't make it to the record books, but they are both trophies to me... Im out to get some does and maybe a hog this weekend! I might post pics soon!

Congats on your first deer man. To me the trophy isn't in the size of the antlers but the size of the experience, and there is no better experience than to shoot your first deer.

Congrats the size of the deer doesn't matter as long as you have fun hunting and still get the rush of adrenaline from doing it. Hope I will be able to post my first deer soon.

Congrats. I shot a 6 point and a spike this year along with a doe. I felt bad at first for shooting a young buck when we have a poor managing system but it was a fun memory and the meat was donated to my grandparents since our refrigerator was full with the other two.

ARhunter,
Don't feel bad about shooting a young buck. Getting any deer is something to be proud of. No deer is greater then another in my opinion. Racks are just a bonus but not the prize.
