I roll cast on windy days when the wind is blowin towards me. If im in cover. Or tryin to work along the shore to a point of interest. Its a great cast to use. The better you get at with it the more you end up usin it.
Roll casting is best used in tight quarters, or in scenarios (like steelhead and salmon fishing)where you must add weight to the line to get you presentation down into the strike zone

The type of fly has nothing to do with roll casting.
You roll cast when your line is out about where you want it, and/or other conditions (wind, obstructions) make the full cast a bad choice.
