THE LOWDOWN Motorola’s top-line model has an emergency-alert function, eight repeater channels, and a built-in flashlight. A mini-USB port adds a charging option, and it also operates on three AAs. The figure-eight-shaped radio, which has a maximum range of 35 miles, can be operated hands-free.
The Motorola got good marks all around. Rosenberg said that it and the Midland had the best reception toward the edge of the ranges. Everyone thought it was easy to use and durable (Rosenberg dropped it in water and mud). The flashlight was popular. Zabel thought the battery-life could have been longer.
