Q:
are there many tactical/cutom rigs built on Savage actions? I've heard that they have really improved and that accuracy is now on par with the big green 700.

On par? Try beats the snot out of it. I am a Remington lover, I have Remington rifles, all good shooters, some from the 60's, some pretty new, but the latest work from Savage is so accurate it isn't funny. I've never seen an unmodified Remington that will shoot with some of the new Savages.

Savage factory rifles are beating custom rifles in competitions now. Team Savage recently cleaned up in the F class world championship matches.

The recently featured Shaw custom rifles are built on Savage actions.

DEP claims that the varminter linked below might be the most accurate varmint rifle he's ever fired, and also says that one of the two smallest groups he's ever fired came from a Savage.

The Savage actions have always been very capable to build on. I once had a Savage 112 that would shoot 1/2" easily straight from the box.

I have a friend who was a SEAL sniper in a former life. He is very picky about firearms. He was the first person I ever met that had one of the Savage tactical models. His is the 20" heavy barrel, McMillan stock .308. And it doesn't hurt that he shoots pretty good too. Actually, he is a shooting machine. If he ever gets into handloading I don't foresee how it can get much better.

Everyone I've ever known that has had a Savage, no matter what flavor or caliber, might have had things to gripe or grumble about but all to a man bragged on the accuracy.

Aren't the Shaw rifles that've got so much praise on here built on Savage actions? If my memory serves me. I have a 35 y.o. Savage 110 that is a better shooter than i.

steve182,
Yea, the new Shaw rifles that Dave talked about are built on Savage actions but, Shaw does true them up. I don't know why, mine from the factory is just fine.

Now on Par? I've shot factory amo & handloaded amo in 20 year old Savage rifles that are tack drivers. Recent production rifles are even better. Advertising has a way of getting into your head even if the product is not superior. You may get some improvement with a "Custom" barrel over a new factory barrel but it will probably be minimal.
