Q:
Im thinking about buying a dedicated slug gun, probably the H&R Slug gun or an 870. Should I get it in 12 or 20 gauge? Now im not exactly recoil shy, but nobody likes getting the snot beat out of them. What say you?

If I were you I'd probably go with the H&R in 20.. It will kill a deer as dead as a Pricey 12 guage will. Good Luck!

ive heard a 20 ga is flatter shooting than a 12 and has about the same knock down power

My experience is with an 870 and slugs out of a smooth barrel. In my opinion, a 20 Gauge with a rifled barrel is plenty adequate for deer. The lower price of the H&R will allow you more money for the scope.

I no longer have the 870 slug gun ,but I do have a couple H&R Ultras both 12's that shoot great out to 100 yards haven had a chance over that. Both under an inch groups with BuckHammers,Copper Solids and the BPI reloads. The money you save will put a nice scope on the gun too. As a dedictated slug gun the H&R fills the bill. But if your'e gonna limit your range or you'll need a fast follow up shot the 870 smoothbore is pretty hard to beat.

a choice between the 870 and the H&R is a tough one. both are good for what you want to do and the 20ga is sufficient.

The 20 gauge Ultra Slug Hunter is very accurate with sabot slugs, pleasant to shoot and powerful enough for deer.

I would go with the 20ga. Another option is the Savage 220. Good luck whichever way you go!

Id say get the 870 in 12. Your not going to get the snot beat out of you shooting once or twice a day. lol

Great point fliphuntr14!

Its not like im gonna be shooting it as much as my bow (I shoot it bout 3,000 times every couple of months)

Plus the fallow up shots with a pump might be nice.

I'd recommend the Rem 870 in 12 ga of the options you suggested. The 870 is tough as nails, reliable, and you can interchange the barrels to let you shoot it as a rifle-barrelled slug-gun, smooth bored trap/bird gun, or in a shorter configuration as a self-defense weapon. It's a great all-around shotgun.
