Federal 2 oz. copper coated #6.
Sorry, missed the 2nd question, no, I don't change anything.
I use Remington high density #6 shot in 3.5 in magnum loads. It has never failed to take down the Tom.
Nitro Turkey #6 3in. The only way I would change is if I hunted on a FWA and they required non toxic shot.
I am definitely not an expert with only one turkey to my name but the 20ga 3" 1 1/4oz #6 Hevishot took down the turkey with authority at 28 yds. Carlson Xfull choke.
I'm constantly criticized for this, but it works for me.
I shoot a Rem 870 12 ga. My ammo is 2 3/4 inch Winchester Super X High Velocity with No. 7 1/2 shot.
I've lost (missed?) one bird in 8 years with that particular load.
I watched my buddy HIT a turkey twice at about 30 yards with 3 1/2 inch Federal Turkey Load No. 4's. We never found the first feather and watched the bird "fly" away. The turkey was standing in front of some "broom" grass, there was NO DOUBT the shot was hitting all around him!
Two days after he left, I anchored a 21 pound bird at the same distance with one shot with the above described ammo.
I use the same ammo everywhere I hunt and I don't hunt public areas where non-toxic shot is required.
Remington nitro turkey 3" #5
Federal Premium Flite Control #5's in 3 inch.
