If I keep a squirrel out side over night with out it being gutted can I still eat it? Thanks, Seth

I wouldn’t.

It takes only a few short hours for bacteria to massively gear up and start consuming the carrion. If it was gutted and the temperature was near freezing or below, and no animals to molest it (like hanging a deer to cure) may be. Otherwise, No way. My rule of thumb: “What ever bacteria that eats a dead carcass would probably be just as happy to eat me.”

It would be really redneck to die "from bad squirrel". And its so easy to clean a squirrel it makes no sense.

One of my primary “rules” of hunting is that as soon as an animal is killed and retrieved, I begin to treat it as food. The first step in the process is to field-dress the animal, which accomplishes two things. 1.) Removing the entrails immediately allows the carcass to begin cooling more quickly, helping preserve the quality of the meat. 2.) Field dressing removes the organs that can be sources of bacteria, digestive enzymes, etc. that can cause spoilage. The next step is to get the dressed carcass cooled down as quickly as possible. If you are hunting in cold weather, this isn’t a problem. If the weather is hot, get the carcass on ice ASAP.

I wouldn't eat it. When I am squirrel and rabbit hunting they get skinned, gutted , and bagged with minutes of being shot. You need to heed the advice given above.

As an educated guess, I would say that seth doesn't know
how to dress the squirrel, and is waiting for help so he doesn't ruin the job by tackling it without supervision. No big deal.

Sounds like you wasted a shell AND a squirrel.
