Hurteau: Buck Scoring Contest, Round II
By Dave Hurteau
Okay, folks, here is the second buck in our rack-scoring contest. (Click here if you missed the first one.) Our theme is F&S bucks. Ever-modest Contributing Editor and “Whitetails” columnist Scott Bestul was too well raised to reveal to you the score of this toad when, last October, he posted its picture here and told the story of how he arrowed it. He did, however, let its score slip to me. (I’m always telling Scott he’s too trusting.) So. . .
Let’s review. You are playing for a Bear Attack compound bow (beararcheryproducts.com), the company’s new flagship model for 2010 and a prize worth about $750. To win it, you need to guess the gross B&C scores of the bucks I post here each Friday, keep track of your guesses, and on the last Friday tally them up and give me a grand total. If your total is closest to that of the buck’s actual scores, you win the bow.* And remember, this time fractionals count.
Okay, go ahead and guess at Scott’s buck.

*You must be at least 14 years of age to win, and if you are under 18 and win, the bow will be sent your parents.

141, that's one old buck! Look at the grey and the roman nose. Might as well age him at 7.5 or older
Now SD,
Don't be discouraging comments. We like comments. :-)

151 5/8!!!
155 5/8
247 and 5/100 of an inch ;)
"He gross-scored 176 and change. Lousy judging skills? Poor camera/deer angle?"
That is a quote from the man who killed it. This competition really isn't fair if you are going to use deer that can be looked up via the internet or any other method. What is sad is that the quote is posted on this very blog on October 1st 2009.

I want to report myself for being too truthful. LOL
My apologies. I wasn't trying to be discouraging. I just think if everyone posts their guesses now, there will be so much more influence on people to change what they might have guessed and just go with some of the most popular answers. That takes the fun out of the competition in my opinion.

Come on Dave Hurteau give me some type of acknowledgement that you have seen my message about Scott Bestul already giving the score of this deer. In your post you even comment that he hasnt given the score to anyone, but that is not true. I understand if you still want to use the buck because your having the contestants guess the fractions, but it isnt really fair to those who are purely guessing measurements from the photos. In my opinion you should pick another deer, but hey that is just my opinion.
i would have to say 148 1/8
162
157 1/8
it looks to be a 12 pt. buck nice spur shaped kicker by his right thumb.
Atleast a 27 maybe 28 in spread I could be wrong angle kinda doesn't give much of a hint.
it's a 13 pter I just saw the other point.. still say 157 1/8
167 5/8

159 3/8
Kris24,
this happened in the last contest as well. If you are correct that the score has been disclosed, a different buck will be chosen. No worries.
I'd say it about 161 5/8"
It did happen in the last contest. since its posted at 176 an some change i'll add my change 7/8. 176 an 7/8

Kris24 and all,
Sorry, I was out most of Friday and all day Saturday. Your are right. This buck is out. Scott must have forgotten that he had posted the score earlier. I'll have a new buck up on Monday. I apologize to all for the inconvenience.
178
I knew that picture looked familiaR
174 3/3
yup,but i don't think the score was
that's 174 3/8
169 3/8
163
What a coincidence! I would have guessed 176.
my guess is 187 6/8 inches
176 1/8
165 2/8
Again, apologies to all. I just contacted Scott, who says he is "red-faced with shame" for forgetting that he'd posted the score. And I'm feeling rather red-in-the-face myself for not catching it.
Anyway, this buck is disqualified, and I'll be putting a new buck up today.

One should not be shocked if people get this 100% correct. There is a program you can download that is used for measuring items in photos online. It is often used to measure target submitted in contest and is very, very accurate. One clicks the starting point and edn point and it tells you what the measurement is in the photo. The software is calibrated by finding items in the picture of known size. Item in this case would be glasses, strap, bow string, string grub, zipper, etc.
:)
1 buck is 122"
2 buck is 168 1/4"
153 3/4
Kris24 is the kind of guy that no one likes to go hunting with I am sure. My stands would be to low, in the wrong tree, or over the wrong trail.......... Who cares that this buck score was posted somewhere in the world of the internet. If you had half-a-brain you would have just kept the number to yourself and been a lot closer to the Grand total than some of the others. Quit telling us how the "Movie Ends" and just have fun with it.
162 3/8
What I find a whole lot more interesting than Kris24 getting upset about the wrong picture is how many people continue to guess the size after it has been disclosed about 5 or 6 times on this very post.
157 2/8
165 7/8
Must be alot of people out there that just look at the pictures. ha There must be at least 20 guesses since the real score was released, how funny.
