On Sunday, September 27, Kyle Anderson of Rapid City, MI caught this 50-pound 8-ounce Great Lakes muskie. The fish is now the new Michigan state record. It beat the old record, set in 1984, by 2.5 pounds. Anderson was fishing in Torch Lake, near Traverse City.

What a fish!!
Awesome awesome fish!!!!!!
That is an amazing fish!
What a great fish and to land it alone is amazing.
nice one man
that is huuuuge. nice catch. The place you fished at looks awesome how the water is so blue and it looks cool how the fins on the fish are red also.
that is awsome!!!!!! We need more of thede kind of trophies in MI.
Another state record fall in Michigan this fall! Absolute Monster!
Thats nearly the size of him!
What an amazing fish- I'd love to know how long it took him to bring that thing in.
Michigan rocks!!
Thats one heck of a fish great job!!
WOW!! What did he catch it on. It's huge!!
I read it. 9" muskie magnet. The lure looks beat up, Did the fish's teeth do that?
HAHAHAHAHA! You guys aren't serious, are you? Those pictures reek of Photoshop. Completely farked. Nice try, though. The lighting doesn't match up with the fish and the rest of the picture and you can see that the fish has been cut out of another one.
And in the second pic, see how big the guys hands are in proportion to the fish. Then compare the size of his hands to the rest of his body. It's not real, folks.
Photo taken by Dave Rose, I live in the Traverse City Area, Dave Rose is a reputable guy and inland lake guide. No way that's photoshop. Plus, there are tons of witnesses. Sick Fish.
I am not denying the guy caught a sweet muskie, but pic #1 and pic #2 are farked. I know a Photoshopped picture when I see one. The hands behind the fish are not lined up, there is no shadow for the fish, and the outline of the fish is digitally altered. His hand "inside" the gills aren't even there, the overlayed fish pic has been put there to act like his hands are in there, when they aren't. In the 2nd pic, you can't even see the guy on the left's hands - how is he holding the fish up? As much as I'd like to agree with you that this is a real pic, it's not. Sorry.
The picture is not faked. The fish looks so large in part because the angler is not particularly tall (Anderson is 66 inches tall, the fish was 55 inches long).
It has nothing to do with the size of the fish (even though that was blown up too), it has to do with the fact that you can see the Photoshopped edges of the fish. Look at the gills in Pic 1 - that's not how gills look when you hold a fish of that size. The fish itself is real, you can tell from the other pics, but they tried to scale it up to make it bigger in Pic 1 and 2. You can tell it's farked by the absences of any shadowing on the fish in comparison to the guy(s) holding it. I deal with digital photography and Photoshop on a daily basis and this is a Photoshopped pic.
storminspank, theres ONE of you in every group... the constant naysayer. The fish is legit, certified by the MDNR. Isn't that good enough for you? I suppose you think the photos of the new state record Brown Trout were faked too? I can tell you they weren't as I know the guide.
Awsome fish and congratulations to the angler. State record and world record. Something the rest of us who ply Michigan's waters can only dream of!!
I'm not a constant naysayer. I love seeing big fish. Most pics are true. I'm, for the most part, a positive person. Again, I'm not saying the fish isn't legit. You can tell by the other pics that it is, however, the first two pics are farked. Good for the guys that caught the fish it's a beast, I just wished we could have seen the real pics of them holding it.
Storm. Here's a link to 6 more photos of the fish taken from the same angle. They were taken directly off the photographer's SD card. No photoshopping. Period.
http://www.fieldandstream.com/photos/gallery/fishing/2009/09/new-mi-reco...
Well myself and everyone esle that's made comments here have NO issues with the photos. I believe them to be legit. Why in the world would this angler or any of his friends take the time to change them? No need. The fish is huge, a state record, and bigger than any other Musky you, me, or anyone else has probably ever seen.
I will have to pay a visit to Torch Lake!
OE - Those pics look exactly like the other two on the site in regard to being PS'ed. You can modify a pic and put them on an SD card, you know, right? I'm a photographer too and if I wanted to take pics - I could modify them and then put them back on my SD card. That's not a valid argument. However, I will stop all the blabbing I have been doing today on this topic. Ignorance is bliss. My apologies if I upset anyone on this site. Tight lines, everyone!
What a fish. That is the most beautiful Muskie I have ever seen. Those fins look like they are on fire. Congrats man- on the catch of a lifetime. PS-those pictures dont look photo-shopped to me

What a fish!?! That Muskie is unreal. Compliments to Kyle Anderson for reeling this in successfully, and to the staff editors here for sharing it with us. This motivates me to go out and find my own.
Beautiful fish. Beautiful lake. 2009 has been an exceptional year for trophy fish and game ... and we still have 3-months left. Must be the weather.
Great fish! Just don't see the need to photoshop the first two pictures---First picture has the shadows going different directions at his feet and holding a 50+ pound fish with his fingertips on outstretched arms???? I don't think so! Blown-up the sencond pic is missing some teeth.
Still, a great fish!
I agree with Storminspank. Either the hair-due on that woman was photoshopped, or Anderson had to go back to 1988 to find a 50lb scale.
Crazy fish my friend, congratulations.
Thats no woman you goofball its Napolean Dynamite!
this fish was caught on the lake i live on! torch lake is the most beautiful place in the world. and these photos are definitely not photoshopped. ive seen muskies that my dad has caught out of the same lake and river, many of them are large compared to other areas of northern michigan. congratulations on the great catch kyle!
NICE CATCH!!! I'm proud to know that the Muskie was brought in at my dad's marina, Luhrs Landing! How weird is it to know that I've been swimming with that big of Muskies for my whole life!!!
Oh and I agree, that Muskie is not photoshopped.
I thought they were fake to until I analyzed them. Definitely not digitally modified (Oh and I'm not just a photographer). Nice Fish!
Great catch, what a beauty. Were you able to release it?
Never mind. Just saw the shot of it on ice. Bummer.
Are you going to eat it!? What was the point? IGFA takes legal submissions with photos (on and off a scale, with tape measure) and overall measurements.
Witnesses and other verification help further. Seems a shame to have killed this monster for a photo.
Made previous comments before reading all of your photo captions. Great effort to release, Great fish!
Congrats!

Well fake or not that is one amazing fish. Congratulations and happy fishing
I can assure you the photos are real. I've been accused of photoshopping the picture of me with the fish from last May (I'm the UM graduate student). Congrats to Kyle on the fish (though I think he owes me a beer, considering I won't be getting anymore data from that fish). If any of you would like info on the muskie study on those lakes I'd be happy to share the details. PM me (can you do that on F&S?), or we can get something going on the boards.
OK, at first I was actually one of the people who thought the first 2 shots looked photoshopped, but after seeing the pics blown up, and seeing the extra bonus shots posted by the webmaster, I'm totally convinced they are real. After all, why would anyone with a record fish have to exaggerate it in pics!
Good job guys and sorry a few of us doubted the pics.
Great Job! Must have been an amazing fight! Id love to catch one of those sometime SOON!
As for Storminspank's comment you can rest assured this is real. I own the marina at the mouth of Torch River. I saw this fish when it was still alive. It is real!!! And in the pictures you will notice this fish had been trap netted in the spring and actually was around 55 lbs then. The taxaderist mounting the fish said there was nothing in the belly of this fish or it would have weighed more. The MDNR fisheries radio tag was returned to them. So moral to the story mr. storminspank if you can't catch your own monster make sure you know what you are talking about before you open your mouth and stick your foot in it.
Awesome, awesome, awesome Muskie... great effort to release.
out of curiosity, is it legal to troll 3 rods with one person in the boat in MI or was there others in the boat?
Legit fish, legit record, legit pictures. Period. As for the person who said that Anderson couldn't hold it up with his fingers...50lbs isn't that heavy (but for a fish it is very heavy) and the dude looks like he spends some time in the gym...so quit doubting it, and just accept the fact that the guy caught an amazing fish.
And ferris13, Michigan law says "The angler may not put more than three separate lines per individual in the water at once."
So he was fishing legally.
I know torch well but didn't know it was muskie water (Too clear and not enough life) Any idea where it was caught? Near the river or further out?
Yeah same here Cesar. I'm REAL curious to know if she came from IN TORCH or in the chain somewhere. I can see a fish of that size coming out of any one of those lakes especially Elk or Skegy. Sick fish though Kyle good job! I feel bummed for your fishin bud though :( the one day that he doesn't get on the boat she decides to show up lol. Good to see a muskie guy that has been sweating blood and tears for yrs out there get the big one Kyle.
Hey "schmallhorse" another question I have is how far away from where you tagged her was she caught? And where abouts did you tag her in torch?
If you look at the pics it was caught just outside the sandbar on TORCH, I know that for a fact. Even though you may have never seen muskie in Torch, they are there, I've definitely seen them in the river many times over my whole life living on Torch River.
Awesome fish...
schram,
The fish was tagged in Clam lake near the DNR access ramp. What we've seen with the muskies so far is that they winter and stage for spawning in the shallower lakes where there is more food (Clam, Skegemog), and after they spawn they typically move out into the deeper lakes where they suspend under lakers, cisco, and whitefish. As far as spawning is concerned, fish from the Torch river down spawn in the river, while fish from Torch lake/Clam spawn in Clam lake itself.
As far as where she was caught, I believe she was in the SE end of the lake near Alden (which is where she has been since June 21 of this year).
wow that fish is a beast...unreal. congrats
Love that he tried to release first.
Good Hook
Great catch, I'm never swimming in Torch ever again.
It's too cold to swim in Torch this year anyway!
NOW I understand why the guys sit around for hours in fishing boats out in front of my house! I'd always heard, "There are no fish in Torch"!
Way to go Kyle! No one is more deserving of this State Record than you! We will now feel more at ease when our kids swim in the lake and the river!! Pam & Rob
hey Shmallhorse,
Is the study you guys were doing available to the public at all through the DNR or anything like that? If so, I would love to get a copy of the data.
Thanks!
ajb81586,
The results of the study will be available to the public in about a year when my thesis is published. I am also planning on preparing a condensed version for publication in a scientific journal. Until then there won't be anything in print.

Beautiful hog muskie! Not sure I'll be swimming in Torch next year though.
Love that Kyle tried to release first.
I'm an avid musky hunter and have never kept a musky. I don't allow a musky to be kept in my boat! But any kind of record, it's going on the wall. This is a once in a lifetime fish. Anyone releasing a fish of this caliber, hats off to them. I'm big into Musky conservation, but these record fish are an exception. Nice fish, and don't feel bad about keeping it.
wow GREAT fish and also wow I swam with that monster muskie.nice one kyle
mAN LOVE TO HAVE YOU COME TO HIGGINS AND SHOW ME HOW TO CATCH THESE STUBBORN TROUT!
What an amazing fish! Once in a lifetime catch. That would eat any muskie I've ever caught for breakfast! Congrats man
Any chance this thing has eaten a water skier or two? If my family sees this one they will think twice about going in one of these Traverse area lakes again!
Awesome catch Kyle!!! I was on a mission this year to break the record but I spent my time on Skegemog. I had a ton of action over there out from the landing. I've always seen Torn as a boating lake and not for fishing. I'll be spending more time on Elk and Torch now. Thanks

Shmallhorse, wow what a story, with the fact that it began last may, adds alot to this record. However, I cannot wait for your published thesis next year, I need to get more facts before that. There is a reason for that! I was on the SE end of Torch fishing on the drop off near Alden 25 - 40 feet of water throwing 'buuldawgs, cowgirls, doublecowgirls, little ernies, etc...i'm sure you get the picture. I was not trolling. The reason for this area of the lake to fish in was because in '05, while trolling for browns, or atlantics, or lakers, I had a 25 minute battle with a huge muskie, (that I released). It was two days before the weekend opener (April ??). This really peaked my interest as I turned an interest to targeting this remakable species. However, am I wasting time casting for this specie on such a gin clear lake, and what else did your studies reveal about the browns, lake trout, or atlantic salmon on these waters? Is this the medium to use for this info? Can you help?
now THAT is a nice fish
Why the fish on ice? What about catch and release. You mean he kept it. Who would do a thing like that?
Shmallhorse,
I'll definitely be looking at the reports when you publish your thesis.
But for now, can you answer me this? Would I be wasting my time around the mouth of the clam river? It seems like that would be a good spot for ciscoes to spawn, and it's right on the way to the muskies wintering location in clam lake.
PS...snoopsister, read the whole story, the fish was gill hooked and he tried to revive it for almost an hour, but it just wasn't going to happen...so then and only then did he decide to keep it.
Congratulations

Look at the gills in Pic 1 - that's not how gills look when you hold a fish of that size. The fish itself is real, you can tell from the other pics, but they tried to scale it up to make it bigger in Pic 1 and 2. You can tell it's farked by the absences of any shadowing on the fish in comparison to the guy(s) holding it. I deal with digital photography and Photoshop on a daily basis and this is a Photoshopped pic.
