USA Wins World Ice Fishing Championship
By Dave Hurteau
From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
Holding fast to its Day 1 lead, the USA Ice Team surprised a field of experienced international anglers and won the 2010 World Ice Fishing Championship in Rhinelander. "We thought we'd be happy with something in the middle of the pack," said team captain Mike McNett of Lombard, Ill. "Tell me I'm not imagining it."
There it was, the crystal WIFC first place trophy, as brilliant as the ice of Boom Lakeunder a late winter sun and as solid as the congratulatory hugs of fellow competitors. Murmurs of "USA, USA" rose from the standing room-only crowd in the Hodag Park weigh-in tent as the result became apparent.…
Poland finished second…and Latvia took third….

Way to represent the ol' USA!!!
I didn't know there was a World Ice Fishing Championship--maybe that's because ice fishing isn't very popular in Florida. I wonder how the Jamaican team did. LOL Congrats to the team--Go USA!
USA!!! USA!!! USA!!!
Proud of the win, but being from the south, I have always wondered . . . how do you REALLY know that ice is going to hold?
of all the sports in the world, that's the one i want to be a part of. how do you get on the team?
finnyk, if there is at least 8 to 10 inches, you are good to go.
I like catchin fish. Watching people catch fish, though, sounds to me as boring as watching a tennis match.
Still, given that the Olympics include "curling" (snooooze!), adding competitive ice-fishing would probably be a good thing for the Winter Games.
"USA, USA","USA, USA"...
Great job on the win and proud to be an American!!!
I didn't even know there was a World Ice Fishing Championship. But I'm glad we won. USA!USA!USA!
First of all I didn't know there was any such thing. I can't watch fishing on the Outdoor channel it is about as exciting as watching grass grow, so I don't think I would do any better live. Anyway Way to Go USA !!!!
This is the 1st time I ever went to an Ice Fishing contest and boy it was the right one. The comments about watching the grass growing, well it didn't happen this day! I meet a lot of good people from Rhinelander and had a ball. I meet Dave Ganz, the ice fishing legend and the "Mad Englishman", Lee Young. For all that missed this event, you missed one of the best events in 2010. I drove 6 1/2 hours to this event, that's 13 hours of driving and it was worth it! Unfortunatly were looking at another 10 years before the next one.
Congrats to the team!!!USA!USA! As a proper southern boy i still have a hard time wrappin my mind around fishin through solid water.LOL
